 Indonesia joins BRICS

Indonesia has become a full member of BRICS, the Brazilian government announced, information about this was posted on the official website of the country's Foreign Ministry.

"As part of Brazil's interim chairmanship of BRICS, which began on January 1 and will last until December 31, 2025, the Brazilian government announced yesterday, January 6, the official accession of the Republic of Indonesia to BRICS as a full member," the statement said.

Indonesia's candidacy was approved by the group's leaders at the Johannesburg summit in August 2023 by consensus, but the accession was preceded by presidential elections in this country and the formation of a new government. President Vladimir Putin, during a direct line combined with a press conference, emphasized that many countries are interested in the development of BRICS, because all decisions in the organization are made by consensus. As the Russian leader noted, the association does not serve as a tool for countering the West, but works for the benefit of its members.

BRICS is an interstate association created in 2006 by Russia, China, India and Brazil, with South Africa joining in 2011. Moscow has held the post of chairman of the organization since January 1, 2024, which has now passed to Brazil. Last year, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the UAE joined the group.
