Microsoft Updates Office Icons for the First Time in Seven Years
04.10.2025 | 13:20 |Microsoft has introduced new icons for the 10 main Office applications — the largest update since 2018. The new design is brighter, more modern, and focused on simplicity and accessibility.
According to John Friedman, Microsoft’s Vice President of Design and Research, the design emphasizes “connection, fluidity, and collaboration.” The icons now feature softer lines, smooth transitions, and vibrant color gradients.
The company noted that in creating the new style, designers were inspired by Copilot, the artificial intelligence system integrated into Microsoft 365. Elements of Copilot’s visual identity served as the foundation for the new symbols.
Some icons were also simplified; for example, in the Word logo, four lines were reduced to three to make the symbol more legible at smaller sizes.
Microsoft will begin a phased rollout of the updated icons in the coming weeks for Microsoft 365 users on the web, desktop, and mobile devices.
