Turkmenistan-Uzbekistan: gas supplies in the multifaceted agenda of cooperation

According to Uzbek media reports, in 2024, Uzbekistan maintained its status as a net importer of gas, increasing its gas imports 2.4 times compared to 2023. According to the national Statistics Agency, the total volume of imports from Turkmenistan and Russia amounted to 1.67 billion dollars.

This marks the second consecutive year that Uzbekistan imports more gas than it exports. In December of last year, gas exports from Uzbekistan to China decreased to 58.8 million dollars, down from 79.4 million dollars in November, although this figure still exceeds the same month in 2023. Uzbekistan plans to completely cease gas exports by 2025-2026.

On the Chinese market, Turkmenistan remains the leader in gas supplies, with exports amounting to 9.57 billion dollars, followed by Russia (8.03 billion), Myanmar (1.39 billion), and Kazakhstan (1.36 billion).

At a meeting on January 27 between President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan, Minister of Foreign Affairs Rashid Meredov, the dynamic growth of trade turnover between the two countries was highlighted, with trade exceeding 1.1 billion dollars in 2024. Close and mutually beneficial cooperation continues in the fields of energy, industrial cooperation, transport and logistics, agriculture, and water management.
