01.02.2025 | 05:05 |The 87th Separate Turkmen Rifle Brigade played a key role in the liberation of Sevastopol. This is stated in declassified documents from the archives of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, which describe the contributions of soldiers from the Soviet republics to the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, as reported by TASS.
The documents highlight that the contribution of the Turkmen SSR to the Victory in the Great Patriotic War was significant, despite the republic being far from the front lines. Over 300,000 residents of Turkmenistan were drafted into the Red Army. They fought on all fronts of the war, participating in key battles such as the defense of Moscow, the Battle of Stalingrad, the Battle for the Caucasus, and the storming of Berlin.
The archived documents recount the combat journey of the 87th Separate Turkmen Rifle Brigade, formed in 1941. The soldiers of this unit were known for their bravery and ability to operate effectively in difficult terrain. The brigade played a crucial role in the liberation of Sevastopol, where it encountered fierce resistance from German forces.
TASS's report emphasizes the heroism of the commander of a rifle company squad in the 87th Turkmen Separate Rifle Brigade, Aydogdy Takhirov, Hero of the Soviet Union.
From the award citation of Senior Sergeant Aydogdy Takhirov of the 87th Separate Rifle Brigade: "After a heavy mortar bombardment, the fascists began their advance near our unit. The combat security was attacked by a company of drunken fascists. Comrade Takhirov courageously engaged in battle, despite being outnumbered by the enemy. The combat security opened fire on the fascists, not retreating a single step. Soon, three soldiers were killed, and Senior Sergeant Takhirov remained alone against the numerous enemy. He continued to fire, not allowing the enemy to advance, and disregarded the injuries he sustained. <...> A hand-to-hand battle ensued. After receiving a number of serious wounds, Takhirov, unconscious, was carried by the Germans to their trench. In this unequal battle, Comrade Takhirov destroyed 47 fascists" the award citation for the title of Hero of the Soviet Union reads.
It has been 82 years since Aydogdy Takhirov's death on January 30, 1943...
In 1943, Russian Soviet poet and war correspondent Mikhail Matusovsky wrote the poem "Aydogdy Takhirov and His Friend Savushkin", which was translated into Turkmen and published as a separate book in Turkmenistan.
