The Legacy of Magtymguly in the context of Foreign Policy and Diplomacy of Turkmenistan
31.01.2025 | 23:55 |Under this title, an article by Esen Aydogdiyev, the Ambassador of Turkmenistan to the Russian Federation and Doctor of Historical Sciences, has been published in the electronic journal "Diplomatic Service and Practice" of the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia.
The article is dedicated to the classic of Turkmen literature, the outstanding poet and thinker, Magtymguly Fragi, and his ideas that laid the conceptual foundations of Turkmenistan’s foreign policy.
The author notes that the philosophical part of Magtymguly's works, his voice advocating for peace, justice, humanism, friendship, patriotism, openness, and respect for all nations, became ingrained in the genetic code of the Turkmen people. These ideas became the alpha and omega of their worldview as part of humanity.
Today, the foreign policy of Turkmenistan is the heir and continuer of his ideas and views on the world and the role of the Turkmen people in it. These ideas have formed the basis of Turkmenistan's neutrality policy and continue to serve as a source of wisdom, continuity, and at the same time, innovation, as well as the relevance of Turkmenistan’s political and diplomatic line, as emphasized in the article.
Permanent neutrality, peacefulness, and equal, respectful cooperation — reliance on these principles creates the ideological and political preconditions for the formulation of a deeply logical, precisely calibrated trajectory for Turkmenistan’s steps on the world stage. The culmination of these efforts is the innovative initiatives and ideas of the head of state in the fields of security, sustainable development, humanitarian and environmental issues, and several other important areas.
A prominent example of this is the proposals put forward by the President of Turkmenistan, including the formation of a Global Security Strategy, which would organically incorporate the potential of neutrality and preventive diplomacy.
In the same logic of continuity and humanism, the initiatives of the President of Turkmenistan to establish a systematic dialogue based on trust and mutual respect as a guarantee of peace continue. Turkmenistan’s unwavering readiness to place its neutrality in the service of peacekeeping and to facilitate the launch of negotiation mechanisms for resolving disputed situations has earned global recognition. The country’s position is clear and firmly articulated: only in conditions of peace and mutual respect can development and progress be achieved.
One of the key directions of Turkmenistan’s foreign policy is cooperation with the Russian Federation, a country with which Turkmenistan shares deep historical ties, friendly, brotherly, and good-neighborly relations. Turkmenistan and Russia are strategic partners, successfully implementing the entire range of bilateral interactions based on the principles of equality, mutual respect, and mutual benefit, as highlighted in the article.
For some, the foreign policy initiatives and proposals of Turkmenistan might seem too distant — both in terms of time and content — from the thoughts expressed by Magtymguly three centuries ago. In reality, this is not the case: Turkmenistan’s international activity and its practical content in a profound, philosophical sense continue and develop the legacy of our national genius.
Turkmenistan’s foreign policy and neutrality are not only political but also moral categories. This is their strength and appeal as an example of a responsible, honest, and just approach to the realities of world politics and international relations, concludes the author.
