Tehran and Ashgabat agreed to expand railway transit
08.09.2025 | 22:40 |Minister of Railway Transport of Turkmenistan Mammet Akmammedov paid a working visit to Iran on September 6-8, where he held meetings with Minister of Roads and Urban Development of the Islamic Republic of Iran Farzaneh Sadegh and head of the Railway Department Jabar-Ali Zakeri. The main goal of the talks was to strengthen cooperation and intensify railway transit between the two countries.
The parties discussed specific measures to increase the volume of freight traffic and improve the efficiency of transit routes. In particular, key transport corridors of great regional importance were touched upon: China-Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran; the international corridor of the "Ashgabat Agreement" (Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Oman); the transit and transport corridor Armenia-Iran-Turkmenistan-Kazakhstan.
The parties agreed to expand ties within the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) and ensure the efficient use of transit routes.
During the visit, the delegation also got acquainted with the work of the wagon control center and the capabilities of the new dry port of Aprin, located near Tehran, at the junction of Iran's East-West and North-South railway corridors, and visited the Akyayla-Incheburun railway crossing on the Turkmen-Iranian border to assess the progress of work on site.
These talks demonstrate the mutual interest of Turkmenistan and Iran in developing the region's transport potential and strengthening trade and economic ties.
