The Babasary Annamyradov Gallery – a New Landmark on Ashgabat's Cultural Map

The gallery of People's Artist of Turkmenistan Babasary Annamyradov opened in Ashgabat with a gala ceremony and a festive vernissage. The renowned sculptor, one of the most prominent figures and pillars of contemporary Turkmen art, presented his private collection to the public in an intimate space.

The artist's works are characterized not by ornate psychologism, but by a figurative, parable-like philosophy, not divorced from life but rooted in the earth and growing from it. As a farmer, he also works with the materials of the earth – wood, clay, metal, stone… And through the science of strength of materials, they respond to him with mutual understanding, a generosity of imagination, images, and narratives.

These thoughts are evoked by the sculpture in the center of the exhibition hall, which at first glance may not seem as striking as other brilliant works by Babasary (his name has become the hallmark of an entire era of Turkmen art). It is the name of a master privy to the secrets of sculpture and form. But at second glance, it captivates the viewer, revealing a multitude of meanings that begin to blossom like a rosebud.

It draws the viewer in, forcing them to consider not only the artist's intentions but also their own perceptions. Like an MRI scan, this work illuminates a person's inner world, allowing them to see what lies hidden behind external trappings. It evokes the thrill of life, its transience, and at the same time, the strength, wisdom, and joy of simple existence.

These are four female figures, each holding an apple, a symbol of life, love, and fertility. Their conspiratorial smiles seem to hold the secret of happiness. Or perhaps the girls are making a wish... The idea for the sculpture, which is now 35 years old, arose spontaneously: the artist saw the material and wondered how to bring it to life. Thus was born the concept where nature gives birth to beauty, and a woman becomes an extension of this life. The work took two months to complete and to this day carries a meditative spirituality.

In addition to works by Babasara Annamyradov, the gallery also features works by other artists, giving the exhibition the feel not of a monologue, but of a dialogue, a conversation—between friends, generations, and schools. It is a space for creative exchange, contemplation, reflection, and inspiration.
