 Geneva: UN Recognizes Turkmenistan as a Leader in the Fight Against Statelessness

A delegation from Turkmenistan, led by Amanmuhammet Sazakov, Chairman of the State Migration Service, is participating in the 76th session of the Executive Committee of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), held in Geneva from October 6 to 10.

During the session, the Committee's activities over the past year are reviewed and a work program for the coming period is approved. In his address at the plenary session, Sazakov presented the results of the practical implementation of the country's international commitments. It was stated that Turkmenistan successfully completed the UN Global Campaign "#IBelong" in 2024, aimed at eliminating statelessness worldwide.

As a result of President Serdar Berdimuhamedov's strong commitment and political will, more than 32,000 stateless persons have received Turkmen citizenship.

In recognition of these achievements, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi presented Turkmenistan with a Certificate of Achievement, recognizing the country's success in eliminating all known cases of statelessness.

Turkmenistan continues to actively collaborate with UNHCR in developing new programs aimed at protecting the rights of migrants and stateless persons. It was noted that Turkmenistan's experience can serve as an inspiring example for other countries.

On the sidelines of the session, Amanmuhammet Sazakov, Chairman of the State Migration Service of Turkmenistan, met with UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi.

Filippo Grandi expressed deep gratitude to the Turkmen side for its comprehensive support of humanitarian principles and continued assistance to UNHCR's activities.

The interlocutors confirmed the high level of cooperation between Turkmenistan and UNHCR, as well as their readiness to further strengthen their partnership, particularly in the area of ​​protecting the rights of refugees and stateless persons.
