Bulgaria Fully Prepared to Switch to Euro

Bulgaria has completed technical preparations for its switch to the euro, scheduled for January 1, 2026. The Bulgarian Customs Agency reported that all its information systems have been adapted and are ready to operate with the new currency.

According to the agency, updated versions of key modules of the Bulgarian Automated Customs Information System (BACIS), including “SUA,” “Requests,” “Returns,” and “Post-Clearance Control,” were successfully implemented in the production environment on October 1, 2025. On the same day, a new module, “Requests under ZADS” (version 0.0.4), was integrated, developed in accordance with the National Plan for the euro transition.

In total, more than 20 information systems were partially or fully updated as part of the preparations. The customs service emphasized that it remains one of the most digitalized government agencies in the country, with more than 95% of administrative procedures conducted electronically. All customs declarations and key processes related to customs and excise duties have been fully digitized.

The agency also noted that the euro transition will not affect business operations. Economic operators will be able to continue submitting declarations through the existing electronic portal in accordance with current technical requirements. The system will continue to support all currencies quoted by the Bulgarian National Bank, including the fixed exchange rate between the lev and the euro.
