Strategy for the development of transport and communications in Turkmenistan: communications unite
09.03.2025 | 19:40 |The transport and communication sector is a key industry of the economy, ensuring the interconnectedness of all its elements. Transport communications also unite all regions of the country and connect it with the global community, facilitating integration into the global economic system. The level of development of the country's transport and communication system is one of the most important conditions for its technological progress and civilization.
The role and significance of this crucial sector are determined by its contribution to the country's GDP and its overall socio-economic development. As reported at the expanded session of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan on the results of 2024, with a GDP growth of 6.3% in the country, this indicator increased by 7.2% in the transport and communication sector.
The transport development strategy aims at the consistent strengthening of its material and technical base, the introduction of modern management methods, the widespread use of digital technologies, an increase in the volume of passenger and freight traffic, the expansion of transit and international freight routes, and the provision of a high level of service and safety for passengers.
Turkmenistan strives for active progress in the field of communications and digital services. Within the framework of the implementation of the Program for the Socio-Economic Development of the Country for 2022–2028, the country is preparing for new significant changes in the field of telecommunications. The "Turkmenaragatnashyk" Agency is conducting research with the aim of introducing modern 5G standards in the country. As part of the ongoing work, the material and technical base of the telecommunications industry is being strengthened, the latest digital technologies are constantly being introduced, and foreign investments are actively being attracted. Decisions have been made on the development of the "Altyn Asyr" cellular communication network in various regions of the country, as well as on the modernization and expansion of the automated billing system.
Within the framework of the project for the development of the "Altyn Asyr" cellular communication network in the country, modern sets of equipment from leading foreign companies have been installed, which provides even remote settlements with high-quality cellular communication, including broadband internet. In addition, work was carried out to install equipment to improve the Internet system. Currently, the leased part of the external internet channel in our country has reached 170 gigabits per second, and the use of the internal internet channel is 95 gigabits per second.
The national e-mail service "sanly.tm" has been launched. According to the agency, a total of 1,068 internet sites are registered in the country, 312 of which are electronic stores and online shops. 209 of these sites were controlled by the State Cybersecurity Agency on a contractual basis. The national antivirus program "Milli One" has been created and launched. The program is regularly updated through the exchange of information with the databases of leading foreign antivirus software companies.
The creation of new platforms and services, as well as the modernization of the existing communication infrastructure, demonstrate Turkmenistan's commitment to the development of a modern digital economy and ensuring its citizens' access to advanced technologies.
