Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan discussed cooperation on the Amu Darya

A meeting of heads and specialists of water management departments of Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan was held in the city of Turkmenabat, during which topical issues of cooperation in the water sector were discussed, in particular the operation and modernization of water management facilities, flood control and bank protection works on the Amu Darya River, and the rational use of water resources, Dunyo news agency reports.
Following the talks, further joint steps were agreed upon in the direction of consistent implementation of the agreements reached at the 4th meeting of the joint intergovernmental commission on water management issues.
The parties agreed to closely cooperate in carrying out the necessary hydrotechnical measures aimed at preventing losses and rational use of the Amu Darya River flow.
An agreement was also reached on conducting joint research work on transboundary water bodies, exchanging experience in introducing water-saving technologies and digitalizing water resources accounting, and cooperating in training personnel for the water management sector.
During the meeting, representatives of the water management departments of Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan visited the facilities of the Tuyamuyun hydroelectric complex and discussed in detail on site joint measures to ensure their effective functioning.
