Turkmenistan moves day off to Monday in connection with Remembrance Day

On Friday, President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov signed a decree to move the day off in connection with Remembrance Day, which this year falls on Sunday.

“In accordance with Part 2 of Article 81 of the Labor Code, the day off from October 6 has been moved to October 7 — Monday. All institutions, enterprises and organizations, regardless of their form of ownership, are required to comply with this decree,” the document published in the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper says.

Turkmenistan marks October 6 as the national Remembrance Day for the victims of the 1948 Ashgabat earthquake and the soldiers who died on the battlefields in which the Turkmen people took part. October 6 is a non-working day in the country.

The Ashgabat earthquake, which occurred on the night of October 6, 1948, remains one of the most devastating natural disasters in human history. Almost every family of native Ashgabat residents has relatives who died or were injured on the night of that tragedy.
