Kazakhstan has ratified the agreement on the maritime state border with Turkmenistan on the Caspian Sea

The law on ratification of the agreement with Turkmenistan on the delimitation of the Turkmen-Kazakh state border on the Caspian Sea and the delimitation of adjacent fishing zones was signed on Wednesday by the President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. The agreement between the countries was signed in Ashgabat in October 2021, the press service of the head of Kazakhstan reports.

The document regulates the demarcation according to the principle of the median line – this method is followed in modern international maritime law to divide the spaces between States with opposite or adjacent coasts. The ratification of the treaty will create favorable conditions for the realization of sovereign rights to subsurface use and fishing of aquatic biological resources, and will also expand good-neighborly relations between the parties.

In addition, the agreement will complete the process of delimitation of the state border of Kazakhstan on the southern borders and will become the first document in history legally fixing the state borders on the Caspian Sea between coastal states, the press service said.
