Turkmenistan at the Environmental Conference in Altai: From Oil and Gas Resources to "Green" Smart Cities

Altai Republic, Russian Federation, July 25 | ORIENT. Turkmenistan took an active part in the International Environmental Conference, which was held on July 25 in the Altai Republic on the territory of the Manzherok resort. The forum, dedicated to environmental conservation and biodiversity, brought together representatives of eight partner countries, including the Russian Federation, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

Turkmenistan's Contribution to the Global Environmental Agenda

The Turkmen delegation at the conference was headed by Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers Nokerguly Atagulyev, who arrived at the event on the invitation of the Russian Government. In his speech at the plenary session "Environmental Challenges: Towards Sustainable Development," he emphasized the growing relevance of environmental issues and the key role of environmental diplomacy in strengthening international cooperation and trust.

Nokerguly Atagulyev expressed gratitude to the Governments of the Russian Federation and the Altai Republic for the warm welcome, noting the beauty and purity of the Altai nature.

The Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers paid special attention to the environmental policy of Turkmenistan, which, under the leadership of National Leader of the Turkmen people Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, is aimed at ensuring environmental safety, sustainable development and preserving the country's natural heritage.

He emphasized that Turkmenistan is a party to a number of important international conventions, including the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, and is also actively implementing the subregional action program of Central Asian countries to combat desertification.

Concrete Steps: From Greening to Renewable Energy

In his report, Nokerguly Atagulyev gave specific examples of Turkmenistan's environmental activities:

• Large-scale greening: Over the past 20 years, more than 162 million seedlings of various tree species have been planted throughout the country

• Specially protected natural areas: The network of 9 nature reserves and 16 sanctuaries, which play an important role in protecting the unique nature of Turkmenistan, is expanding.

• Water-saving technologies: Given its dependence on transboundary rivers, Turkmenistan is introducing water-saving technologies and improving legal regulation. Rural producers are provided with preferential loans for the purchase of water-saving equipment.

• Biodiversity conservation: Active international cooperation is helping to increase the numbers of rare species, such as the leopard, which is now found in neighboring regions.

• Renewable energy development: A solar and wind power plant has been built in the west of the country, providing energy to communities along Lake Altyn Asyr. Plans are underway to develop a roadmap for the introduction of solar energy, including innovative solutions for the smart and green city of Arkadag, where a pilot solar power plant will produce more than 4 GW of energy annually, reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

• Preservation of unique ecosystems: The desert ecosystems of Bereketli Garagum, Gaplangyr, Repetek and Eradzhi are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
