FIFA considers expanding World Cup 2030 to 64 teams
07.03.2025 | 09:30 |The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) is considering the possibility of increasing the number of participating national teams in the 2030 World Cup to 64.
This proposal was put forth by a representative from Uruguay, who suggested that such an expansion could serve as a symbolic gesture in honor of the 100th anniversary of the inaugural World Cup held in 1930. Uruguay hosted the first-ever World Cup in 1930 and will be one of the host nations for the tournament a century later.
According to the American daily newspaper The New York Times, FIFA President Gianni Infantino responded favorably to the idea, deeming it intriguing and expressing the need for further analysis.
The reaction from other FIFA Council members has been mixed. Some experts suggest that expanding the tournament to 64 teams could lead to an increase in the number of matches and, consequently, additional financial revenue. However, it could also pose logistical challenges.
The 2030 FIFA World Cup is set to take place across three continents: Europe (Spain and Portugal), Africa (Morocco), and South America (Uruguay, Paraguay, and Argentina), making it a unique event in the tournament's history.
