Kazakhstan to establish natural reserve for Caspian seals

Kazakhstan plans to establish a natural reserve for Caspian seals, marking a significant step in the conservation of this rare species.

This announcement was made by Zulfiya Suleymenova, Advisor to the President and Special Representative of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan for International Environmental Cooperation, during a roundtable discussion in Astana. The roundtable focused on conceptual approaches and priorities within the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)-Kazakhstan Partnership Program for sustainable water resource management and irrigation.

The reserves will be located within the Caspian Sea's waters, encompassing territories of the Mangystau and Atyrau regions.

The project will also include the establishment of a research institute dedicated to studying the Caspian Sea's ecosystem and developing seal conservation measures.

It is anticipated that the reserve will not only aid in preserving the Caspian seal population but will also become an integral part of the region's ecosystem, contributing to the restoration of other flora and fauna species.
