India intends to create its own semiconductor industry

India intends to form its own semiconductor industry. This was reported in a statement by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology of India.

Thus, the Indian multinational conglomerate Tata Group, headquartered in Mumbai, has begun construction of a large semiconductor plant in the state of Assam in eastern India.

The cost of construction of the plant is estimated at $3.2 billion, and its design capacity is 48.3 million chips per day.

As stated by the head of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology of India, Ashwini Vaishnav, the enterprise will become a place for the development of advanced Indian semiconductor assembly technologies, including Wire Bond, Flip Chip and I-SIP technologies.

These technologies are extremely important for key industries such as automotive, especially electric vehicles, communications, network infrastructure and others.

At the same time, the country will attract foreign companies and create favorable conditions, including through financial incentives.

In June 2023, the state of Gujarat signed an agreement with Micron Technology to establish a plant in the region, the total investment in which could amount to almost $3 billion. It is expected that it will begin production in December 2024. At the end of last year, Taiwanese company Foxconn filed an application to locate chip production in India.
