Vnukovo and Koltsovo Airports implement AI for passport control
29.07.2025 | 15:40 |Russian company Smart Engines has announced the deployment of its AI-powered document recognition technologies at Moscow's Vnukovo Airport and Yekaterinburg's Koltsovo Airport. These airports now feature automated passport control points.
This innovation significantly expedites the control process. Passengers simply present their passports to a specialized scanner, and AI algorithms promptly verify the data, confirming document authenticity. The technology is integrated into the "Sapsan" automated passport control system (APCS).
Two Smart Engines neural networks are responsible for the verification process. The first, GreenOCR, handles character recognition, extracting data from Russian international passports and cross-referencing it with a database.
The second neural network, Sherlock, performs an in-depth analysis of the passport spread across visible, ultraviolet, and infrared spectrums. It meticulously examines holograms and other security features. Sherlock is capable of detecting counterfeits of any complexity, ranging from altered photographs to deepfakes.
Smart Engines emphasizes that these automated points not only accelerate and contactless the control process but also significantly enhance security by identifying attempts to use counterfeit or invalid documents.
