Customs of the future: Turkmenistan develops ties and implements digital technologies

The Customs Service of Turkmenistan is actively involved in the international dialogue aimed at simplifying trade and increasing the efficiency of border control. The delegation of the agency took part in two important events in Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan): a meeting of the CAREC Customs Cooperation Committee and the final conference of the BOMCA program.

These events clearly demonstrated how Turkmenistan, together with other countries, is building a “customs of the future” — modern, fast and transparent.

What was discussed in Bishkek?

“Green Customs”: Participants discussed how to make customs procedures not only efficient, but also environmentally friendly, which is in line with global trends.

Digitalization: One of the key areas is the transition to paperless trade and the introduction of digital technologies. This will speed up the passage of goods across the border and minimize the human factor.

Risk Management: Customs services will now be able to more effectively detect and prevent illegal activities without creating obstacles for honest business.

At the meeting, representatives of Turkmenistan presented a report on their national projects, emphasizing that the country is actively introducing advanced technologies and seeking close cooperation with international partners.

BOMCA is another example of a successful partnership. This program, supported by the European Union, has been helping Central Asian countries improve border security and develop cross-border cooperation for many years. Participation in it has allowed Turkmenistan to strengthen its potential and train highly qualified specialists.

The 10th phase of the Program (BOMCA-10), implemented from April 2021 to September 2025, was aimed at increasing security and stability in Central Asia. Its key areas were integrated border management, facilitation of legitimate trade, development of cross-border cooperation and improvement of living conditions of the population in border areas.

The final conference, held on September 5 at the Sheraton Bishkek Hotel, summed up the results of the program implementation in Central Asia, presented the achievements of the beneficiary countries and outlined the prospects for the next - 11th phase of BOMCA.

Thus, the work of Turkmen customs goes far beyond simple cargo control. It becomes part of a global process aimed at developing international trade, strengthening security and introducing innovations.
