Microsoft and Barclays have unveiled an energy-efficient optical computer

In partnership with Barclays, Microsoft has introduced a prototype of an analog optical computer (AOC). This revolutionary device performs computations not with electricity, like conventional processors, but by manipulating the intensity of light as it passes through lenses and sensors. This technology allows for unprecedented efficiency.

The main advantage of the new computer is its impressive energy efficiency. The system can achieve a performance of 500 TOPS per watt, making it 100 times more efficient than modern graphics processing units (GPUs). This development is extremely important for advancing artificial intelligence and solving complex optimization problems that require immense computational power with minimal energy consumption.

Microsoft stated that it plans to share the algorithms and a "digital twin" of its setup with the research community. This will allow other scientists and engineers to further develop this field without needing access to the physical prototype. Thus, the new optical computer could be a significant step toward finding more powerful and sustainable solutions for the future of technology.
