Iran expands cooperation with Turkmenistan in transit and cargo transportation

Iran is actively developing mutual cooperation in transit and cargo transportation with neighboring countries, with Turkmenistan holding a key position. This was stated by Iran’s Minister of Roads and Urban Development, Farzana Sadig, at a meeting with members of the parliament’s urban development committee, as reported by Trend.

According to Sadig, transport projects are among Iran’s top priorities. As part of the International North–South Transport Corridor, construction of the Rasht–Astara railway is ongoing, with land acquisition for the section already completed. The Chabahar–Zahedan railway line is also being built at a rapid pace to connect the Iranian port with inland regions and create additional transit opportunities to Central Asian countries, including Turkmenistan.

The eastern branch of the North–South Transport Corridor, which links Iran with Turkmenistan and other Central Asian countries, is particularly important for developing transit cooperation. This route will accelerate the delivery of goods to Russia and to Northern and Western Europe, cutting transportation time by more than half.

Farzana Sadig also mentioned that the construction of the Shalamcheh–Basra railway between Iran and Iraq is expected to be completed in the coming years, which will further expand the country's transit capabilities.
