In the atmosphere of Pakistani hospitality: an evening of taste, music and dialogue of cultures in Ashgabat

The Pakistani diplomatic mission in Ashgabat received guests on September 2 at the capital's Yildiz Hotel, a hall of which was transformed into a bright and flourishing platform for cultural exchange. The evening, dedicated to the music and culinary traditions of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, brought together representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in Turkmenistan, journalists, cultural and scientific figures. This was one of the first significant events under the leadership of new Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Ms. Faryal Leghari, who took office only a month ago. Her recent appointment gives this event a special symbolism, emphasizing the desire to actively develop ties between Turkmenistan and Pakistan.

From the first minutes it became clear: this is not just a diplomatic reception, but a real immersion into the colorful world of Pakistan. An exhibition of folk crafts and decorative and applied arts was organized in the hotel lobby, which was represented by elegant wood carving, inlay and engraving, fine patterned weaving, embroidery, braiding and many other genres of inexhaustible folk “handmade”.

Outlandish vessels, painted shawls, bright rugs, magic slippers with jauntily upturned toes... - like animated illustrations of oriental fairy tales. Because each thing, object carries a legend, a story about the life of the people, the history of love and struggle.

Nearby, in contrast, are posters of modern mining and logistics companies of Pakistan. This clearly demonstrated how the rich historical heritage embodied in the Great Silk Road finds its new embodiment in new economic realities, uniting countries with a common past and future.

After getting acquainted with the exhibition, the guests were invited to the main hall, where Ms. Faryal Leghari delivered a welcoming speech. Warmly greeting the audience, she noted the excellent bilateral relations that Turkmenistan and Pakistan have maintained for decades. The Ambassador congratulated Turkmenistan on the 30th anniversary of neutrality and the International Year of Peace and Trust, expressing pride that the concept of permanent neutrality of Turkmenistan was first voiced in Islamabad, in 1995, at the ECO summit.

In confirmation of the closeness of spiritual traditions, the Ambassador cited as an example the veneration of such personalities as poets and philosophers Allama Muhammad Iqbal in Pakistan and Magtymguly Fragi in Turkmenistan, who preached the ideas of unity and left an indelible mark on the consciousness of their peoples.

Faryal Leghari also noted that architectural, artistic and musical traditions testify to the close cultural ties between our peoples, and this component is no less important today than political and economic relations. The Ambassador proposed to work together to strengthen cultural contacts through joint art exhibitions and concerts, exchanges in the field of textiles and fashion, culinary, poetry and film festivals, and cross-lectures. She also expressed hope that this evening will be the beginning of a new chapter in the development of bilateral relations and will contribute to strengthening friendship and mutual understanding between our countries.

The Ambassador's idea was supported in his speech by Minister of Culture of Turkmenistan Atageldy Shamyradov. He recalled the joint projects that have already been implemented, including in the field of studying the historical and cultural monuments of the Silk Road and its popularization in the world, literary heritage, etc., and expressed confidence that the current event - acquaintance with the culinary traditions of Pakistan - will further contribute to the development of humanitarian ties.

The gastronomic immersion was enhanced by the musical component – the guests heard Pakistani songs and instrumental compositions with mesmerizing string modulations. These melodies, performed with soul and skill by the chamber orchestra conducted by Resul Klychev, not only entertained, but also revealed to the guests the deep facets of Pakistani culture, its spirituality and love of life.

Pakistani cuisine, known for its richness of tastes and aromas, took center stage at this evening. The guests were offered to taste a variety of dishes, each of which was a touch of history…. To warm up, delicious salads with original flavor combinations (crispy eggplant with pomegranate, chickpeas with vegetables and spices) were served, as well as golden samosa (can be compared to miniature samsa) with different fillings. It is the subtleties of preparation and seasoning that make samosa a real delicacy.

The delicious treats included malai boti - juicy pieces of marinated chicken, aromatic biryani - rice cooked with meat, vegetables and exquisite spices, the most tender sikh (mini kebab) and korma (kavurma) made from kid goat. Even the names of some dishes (samosa, korma) reflect the similarity of the culinary heritage of the Turkmen and Pakistani peoples.

Each treat was not just food, but a part of the hospitable Pakistani culture, offering to get to know it through unique taste sensations.
