 New UNFPA director for Turkmenistan assumes office

In January 2025, Chinwe Ogbonna officially assumed the position of UNFPA Representative in Kazakhstan and Country Director for Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan. The UNFPA Turkmenistan Country Office announced this news. Ogbonna brings over 20 years of experience at the global, regional, and national levels in adaptive leadership, intergovernmental relations, and strategic partnerships to achieve large-scale results.

Utilizing evidence-based strategies and guided by research on implementation and foresight, she ensures effective management focused on responsive and organizational actions to meet the needs of current and future generations. Chinwe Ogbonna is a strong advocate for accelerating and scaling up multi-sectoral investments to empower women, adolescent girls, and youth.

Prior to her current appointment, Ogbonna held various positions within the UNFPA system, specializing in areas such as strengthening health systems and health economics. Before joining UNFPA, she worked with the World Health Organization in Ethiopia, where she was seconded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as well as with the Family Health International (FHI), USAID, and the Nigerian government.

A Nigerian national, Chinwe Ogbonna holds a degree in Pharmacy and a Master's degree in Health Systems Management from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the University of London, with a focus on health economics and financing. She also has additional qualifications in health economics from Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh and the World Bank Institute in Washington on sustainable financing in developing markets and economies. Ogbonna was a 2013 Rockefeller Foundation Fellow (Global Leadership in Social Innovation program). She is actively involved in the community of African health economics and policy experts, fostering strategic partnerships for transformative action.
