Now in Istanbul, with a population of about 10 thousand people, there are at least 318 buildings that can instantly collapse in an earthquake. According to the Assistant Secretary General of the Mayor's Office of Bugra Gokce, another 1,525 buildings belong to categories D and E, that is, high risk.
In order to speed up the process, the Mayor's office of one of the main cities of the republic allocates an additional 4,500 liras for apartment rentals.
In 2019, the city authorities, together with Istanbul Technical University, launched a program of voluntary and free evaluation of houses in the city, which allows to identify the risk of collapse. During the 3 years of the program, almost 30 thousand requests were processed, and after the natural disaster on February 6, about 40 thousand requests were received, including the requirement to urgently check the building.
