Youth as Active Contributors to a Safer Future for Turkmenistan
19.11.2024 | 18:35 |To mark the World Day Against Transnational Organized Crime, Turkmenistan hosted a two-day event highlighting the role of youth in fostering safer communities and preventing organized crime. The initiative, titled “Youth Engagement in the Prevention of Organized Crime” was organized by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Safe Migration in Central Asia (SMICA) program, in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Turkmenistan, and various local and international partners.
On November 18, a special event was held at the Ashgabat city municipality educational upbringing specialized school №21 for 11th and 12th grade students. The session focused on raising awareness about the risks of trafficking in persons (TIP) and organized crime, encouraging students to become active participants in promoting community safety.
The following day, November 19, the social event took place, bringing together over 100 youth, including students, volunteers, and members of the Regional Youth Network. This gathering focused on empowering young people to strengthen their communities against organized crime and human trafficking.
In her opening remarks, U.S. Ambassador Elizabeth Rood emphasized the vital role that informed and engaged youth can play in building resilient communities, stating that “youth are essential partners in creating a safer future for Turkmenistan.” She encouraged participants to use their knowledge to protect their communities and inspire others, underscoring USAID’s commitment to empowering the next generation of leaders. SMICA shared its work in educating youth on TIP prevention, providing them with tools to protect themselves and raise awareness within their communities.
Both events were organized with the support of national partners, including the Ministry of Interior and the General Prosecutor’s Office. They featured a variety of activities, such as a National Youth Competition and interactive discussions in Turkmen, Russian, and English. Participants also learned from local NGOs who shared how youth can contribute to combating organized crime through their actions and community involvement. Private sector sponsors like Skechers, Dap, Ish Nokady and Atavatan New Portal kindly provided valuable prizes for the most active youth participating at the events.
These two events highlighted the importance of collaboration between public, private, and non-profit organizations, alongside the enthusiasm of youth, in creating safer and more resilient communities. Participants left the events inspired and equipped with new insights to contribute to a safer and more secure future for Turkmenistan.
