Unique Russian container ships to appear on the Caspian section of the North-South ITC
02.01.2023 | 18:12 |JSC "Southern Center of Shipbuilding and Ship Repair" in the Astrakhan region will start production of the first container ships of project 00108, developed by the Russian design bureau "Vympel". Astrakhan shipbuilders will be the first in the Russian Federation to create unique vessels - special universal dry cargo container carriers for the North-South International Transport Corridor. These vessels will be built specifically for the specifics of the Caspian Sea. They will have wide sides and low draft. The first contract for the supply of four such vessels of increased container capacity was signed in December 2022.
The first ship should be handed over to the customer in 2024, and mass production will begin within 6-7 months after that. If there is sufficient demand, JSC "SCSSR" will be able to produce 2-3 vessels per year, according to the journal "Economic Review".
In this project 00108 (dimension "Volgo-Don Max"), due to the bow position of the wheelhouse, the vessel's container capacity was increased by 50%. The commissioning of the mentioned vessels will increase the cargo flow between the Russian Federation and other countries. At the same time, the Volga-Caspian Sea Canal is being reconstructed. In 2023, the draft of the structure will be increased to 4.5 meters.
