"The Quiet Charm of Turkmenistan": A View from Kazakhstan on the Osaka Pavilion

We are all interested in looking at ourselves from the outside, through the eyes of another person. Sometimes, in order to truly appreciate something important on a larger scale, this view from the outside is also necessary. This perspective gives new depth and reveals unexpected meanings. It is especially valuable when this view belongs to our neighbors, who subtly sense related, but unique features.

This is exactly the focus that interested us when we came across an article by Polina Pavlinskaya on the pages of the Kazakhstani publication Mustafin Magazine, dedicated to the Turkmenistan pavilion at the World Expo 2025 in Osaka. The magazine, distinguished by a stylish and extraordinary approach to content, presented our cultural space in such a way that it became closer and more understandable to foreign readers.

The author drew attention to the key feature of the Turkmen pavilion, which distinguishes it from others. She notes that the building's façade "does not shout about itself - it attracts differently", thanks to the wavy lines reminiscent of sand dunes, and a huge screen broadcasting live images of Turkmen nature. This original design, created by the local company "Belli", does not imitate traditions, but "is its own continuation, translated into the language of modern materials".

Polina Pavlinskaya, describing the architecture, very subtly notes: "For Kazakhstanis, its lines and rhythm read a related logic. This is not a stylization of Central Asia - this is its true voice".

The publication pays special attention to the popularity of the pavilion. The author emphasizes that by July it had surpassed the million-visitor mark, becoming one of the most visited objects of the exhibition. This popularity "is not the result of advertising, but the consequence of word of mouth and repeat visits." Visitors, according to a poll by ABC TV, placed the pavilion in third place, noting its calm atmosphere and the originality of the exhibition.

The Kazakh journalist also warmly describes the interior contents: books about Turkmenistan in Japanese, an exhibition about medicinal herbs that “reminds elderly Japanese of their own herbal traditions.”

In conclusion of the article, the author draws a conclusion that very accurately conveys the spirit of the pavilion: “The Turkmen pavilion does not try to impress, it allows you to slow down. Visitors leave not with adrenaline, but with a sense of discovery. This was a country they knew little about and now want to explore.” vzglyad-kazahstan-pavilion-turkmenistan-expo-2025 (3).jpg

A similar publication, which appeared on the pages of a Kazakh publication, not only informs, but also serves as a vivid example of good-neighborly relations. It shows that the dialogue between our peoples is not only official meetings, trade and joint projects, but also a lively, sincere interest in each other, which is reflected in culture and media.
