An expert spoke about the stages of development of the “Galkynysh” gas field and progress in extinguishing the “Darvaza” crater

The “Galkynysh” gas field remains a strategic facility for the gas industry of Turkmenistan and the entire world. According to Irina Luryeva, Doctor of Technical Sciences, who heads the laboratory for the development of the “Galkynysh” gas field at the Scientific Research Institute of Natural Gas of the State Concern «Turkmengaz», the project is located in the pilot-industrial operation stage.

– Forecast calculations provide for seven stages of field development – Irina Ilyinichna notes. – Innovative technologies, such as deep drilling and modern gas treatment systems that meet global standards, are already being actively used. Special attention is paid to the rational use of resources and environmental safety. In the coming years, the transition to the second, third, and fourth stages of development is expected.

According to Luryeva, a phased development strategy allows for flexible management of investment flows and increased efficiency of technological processes. In particular, the possibilities of processing sulfur and carbon dioxide are being studied, which minimizes environmental risks. It is planned that gas production at the field will reach 200 billion cubic meters per year.

In her interview, Irina Luryeva also drew attention to the problem of the Darvaza gas crater, which has been burning since 1963.

– Interest in this phenomenon is enormous, but it also poses an environmental problem. Significant volumes of gas are being consumed, which could generate profit – Luryeva emphasized.

Employees of the Scientific Research Institute of Natural Gas have proposed a number of solutions to reduce the crater's impact on the environment. Among them are managing the gas filtration flow and drilling a new well near the crater.

– We are already seeing the first results: satellite images provided by Capterio confirm a reduction in gas emissions – Irina Ilyinichna added.

The measures taken not only help reduce uncontrolled emissions but also demonstrate Turkmenistan's commitment to environmental responsibility.

Thus, Turkmenistan continues to develop its largest gas projects, combining the introduction of innovations and sustainable ecological development. The “Galkynysh” field and the “Darvaza” gas crater are striking examples of an effective approach to the development of natural resources and the solution of related problems.
