500 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Central Asia replaced 696 million tons of coal in China

Natural gas has made an outstanding contribution to improving environmental quality in China and transforming the country’s energy structure into a clean and low-carbon one. Since it began operation in 2009, the Turkmenistan-China gas pipeline has delivered more than 500 billion cubic meters of natural gas. According to the China National Petroleum Pipeline Company, the volume of equivalent coal replaced by natural gas during the same period was about 696 million tons.

This reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 764 million tons, sulfur dioxide by 25 million tons, dust by 379 million tons, and nitrogen oxides by 6.27 million tons. These environmental benefits are equivalent to planting 2.373 billion hectares of broadleaf forest, covering about 2.48 of China’s land area.

The Central Asian gas pipeline, which starts in Turkmenistan and passes through Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, is China's first multinational gas pipeline with a total length of 1,833 km and an annual throughput capacity of 60 billion cubic meters of gas.

The pipeline has supplied gas to more than 500 million residents of 27 provinces, cities, regions of the PRC and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

To date, the volume of natural gas trade between China and Turkmenistan has reached 415 billion cubic meters, Zhang Daowei, Deputy General Director of China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) said at the 29th International Oil and Gas Forum in Ashgabat.
