In Russia, Wi-Fi will be launched on planes, trains and ships

Russia plans to allocate radio frequencies for the use of wireless Wi-Fi networks on airplanes, trains and ships, the daily Izvestia newspaper reports.

This issue is planned to be considered at a meeting of the State Commission in the fourth quarter of this year.

In particular, it is planned to allocate radio frequencies of the Ku and Ka bands, which use frequency ranges from 12 to 18 GHz and from 26.5 to 40 GHz, respectively.

"The adoption of this decision <...> will allow high—speed Internet access to mobile facilities, including air, sea and river vessels, land transport throughout the territory of the Russian Federation," the document says.

For these purposes, it is planned to use the promising satellite systems Skif and Express-RV, which are being developed by Roscosmos. They also plan to use the Bureau 1440 LLC project to create a low-orbit satellite constellation for broadband data transmission.
