 Tajikistan will transfer the chairmanship in the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea to Kazakhstan

Tajikistan will transfer the chairmanship in the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFAS) to Kazakhstan. The Fund Council will be held in Dushanbe as part of a consultative meeting of the leaders of the heads of state of Central Asia, scheduled for September 14. This was announced at a briefing by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan Sodik Imomi.

“At the upcoming summit, which will be chaired by the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, President of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea Emomali Rahmon, the chairmanship will be transferred to our Kazakhstani partners,” the Deputy Minister said.

Rotation occurs in the fund every three years. Tajikistan chaired the IFAS in 2020- 2023.

It is expected that at the summit the leaders of the countries of the Central Asian region will discuss the activities of the fund, environmental protection in the Aral Sea basin, the state of regional cooperation in the management of water and energy resources.

The International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea was established in 1993 by the heads of Central Asian states to overcome and resolve the environmental crisis and improve the socio-economic situation in the Aral Sea basin. This year IFAS celebrates 30 years since its creation.
