TAPI, Investments, and Eco-Projects: What else made 2024 memorable for Turkmenistan's oil and gas industry
10.01.2025 | 13:30 |Turkmenistan's oil and gas complex continues to play a key role in the country's economy, demonstrating significant success through large-scale projects and the introduction of innovative technologies. In 2024, the industry reached new heights, strengthening the country's position as one of the leading exporters of energy resources.
The ambitious tasks set for the fuel and energy complex (FEC) regarding the identification and development of new rich deposits, increasing the production and processing of hydrocarbons, forming various routes for delivering Turkmen energy resources to world energy markets, and using innovations in oil and gas production, drilling, and well workover, including through attracting specialized foreign companies and investments, are being systematically addressed by the State Concerns «Türkmennebit» and «Türkmengaz», and the State Corporation «Türkmengeologiýa».
Advancement of the TAPI Project
One of the main achievements was the continued implementation of the TAPI project — the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India gas pipeline. This year saw the commencement of construction of the section from Serhetabat to Herat in Afghanistan, as well as the construction of the "Shatlyk-1" gas compressor station, bringing the project closer to its final stage. This large-scale infrastructure project, dubbed the "White Road of Arkadag" strengthens energy cooperation in the region and secures Turkmenistan's strategic role in international gas supplies.
Development of Oil Refining
In 2024, attention was focused on deep hydrocarbon processing. The Turkmenbashi complex of oil refineries increased the production of high-octane gasoline and diesel fuel meeting environmental standards. The natural gas-to-gasoline plant in the Akhal region demonstrated steady growth in output of products in demand on world markets. Production complexes specializing in deep processing of hydrocarbon raw materials also contribute to achieving the set goals. Among them is the polymer plant in the Kiyanly settlement of the Balkan region, which produces high-density polyethylene and polypropylene of various grades.
At the Seydi and Turkmenbashi oil refineries, there are also oil refining units producing aviation, lighting, and technical kerosene, liquefied gas, various types of diesel fuel, lubricating oils and polypropylene, calcined electrode coke, road and construction bitumen, packaging film of various thicknesses, and other products.
Environmental Initiatives
A special focus is on the development of environmentally friendly technologies. Turkmenistan continues to fulfill its obligations under the Paris Agreement, aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The construction of the first hybrid solar-wind power plant near the Turkmen "Altyn Asyr" Lake became an important step in the transition to "green" energy.
It should be noted that by joining the Global Methane Pledge (GMP) and adopting the global gas industry's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, international experience in technological innovations in emissions measurement, as well as digital resources and computing services, Turkmenistan plans to achieve zero growth in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
In addition, our state attaches great importance to direct participation in the activities of the MARS digital platform, created within the framework of the UN Environment Program.
Attracting Foreign Investment
Equally significant are the successes in attracting foreign investment. A clear demonstration of this is the visiting International Forum on Attracting Foreign Investment in Turkmenistan's Oil and Gas Industry, which took place in Paris in April, the International Scientific and Practical Conference "Energy Prospects, New Technologies and Environmental Aspects of Hydrocarbon Field Development" 1 (TESC-2024) held in June, as well as the International Conference and Exhibition "Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan-2024," organized by the State Concerns «Türkmengaz», «Türkmennebit» and the State Corporation «Türkmengeologiýa» in Ashgabat in October. Thanks to such meetings, Turkmenistan strengthens partnerships with leading global companies.
OGT-2024
OGT-2024 — the International Conference "Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan – 2024" became a landmark event of the year. The event addressed prospects for gas exports, the introduction of digital technologies in the industry, and environmental projects. The participation of leading specialists and companies made it possible to establish new business contacts and present innovative approaches to the development of the oil and gas sector. The stable development of Turkmenistan's oil and gas complex confirms the country's status as a reliable partner in the global energy market. The successes of 2024 demonstrate the effectiveness of state policy in this area and open up new prospects for further growth and modernization of the oil and gas industry.
