The Power of Words in the Era of Information Wars and media diplomacy: intersections and landmarks
06.07.2023 | 22:15 |Starting somewhere from the second half of the XX century and until today, humanity has been on the verge of the Third World War more than once. Concerns about this are often expressed in the media, although in fact the Third World War has been going on for a long time and it is taking place in the global information space. Today it often looks like "Fights without rules" and is built according to the same scheme and tactics, where entertainment and emotional reaction prevail over argument and fact, stated Bekdurdy Amansaryyev, editor-in-chief of the ORIENT website, invited as a speaker to the 24th Central Asian Media Conference organized by the OSCE. Media forum "At the crossroads. Protection of media freedom in the name of democracy" takes place on July 6-7.
Speaking at a session entitled "Hate speech" and dissecting this toxic phenomenon in journalism, he noted that in addition to the media, thanks to social networks, the number of offensive, intimidating, hateful and inflammatory content is constantly growing online. However, cyber–hatred, born in a virtual environment, has its consequences in the real world - these are those terrible incidents of terrorist attacks, mass shooting and violence, when ordinary, innocent people die.
Agreeing with the organizers of the current forum that "the language of hostility can seriously undermine social cohesion, pluralism and peaceful coexistence in different societies," Amansaryyev contrasted it with the language of mutual understanding.
— If you and I have ten reasons to quarrel, and only one is to find a common language, the points of intersection of the lines of our mutual understanding with you, then we must discard the 10 reasons separating us and work out that, perhaps, the only opportunity that will help the conflicting parties to understand each other, - said Amansaryyev.
Moreover, both at the personal level and interstate. And the same platforms that are used to incite hatred can also be used to creatively combat this phenomenon with the same power of language, but the language of friendship.
If the language of enmity generates a closed narrowing circle, then the language of friendship expands the circle of any communication, making it permeable and strong at the same time, just as openwork trusses work for the stability of a bridge.
Turkmenistan, as a state with a neutral foreign policy status, adheres to neutrality in its information activities. And just as in politics, this does not mean self-exclusion from international problems, but the search for their constructive solution by diplomatic means.
— As a country that has put forward a global initiative supported by the UN, "Dialogue is a guarantee of peace", Turkmenistan stands in the media space for the formation of a new security architecture, a new ecosystem of cooperation and consolidation of efforts in the fight against common challenges and threats, – the speaker stressed.
And there are a dime a dozen of them in our time: illegal distribution of drugs, narcotic drugs and precursors, international terrorism, climate change, the problem of increasing shortage of fresh water, food shortages on the planet, etc.
— The multipolar world, immersed in the struggle of contrasting beliefs and points of view, almost missed the birth of an aggressive Global Islamic State, which was preparing to destroy everything that civilizations had accumulated over many millennia of existence, - said Amansaryyev. And he called on his colleagues to be vigilant and thoughtful when dealing with such "weapons" as the Word, saying: "And we will discard the Language of enmity and hatred, changing it to the Language of mutual understanding."
