Reddit challenges Google by evolving into a full-fledged search engine
03.08.2025 | 14:11 |The social network Reddit has announced ambitious plans to develop its search technology, with the goal of transforming into a full-fledged search engine. According to CEO Steve Huffman, Reddit is concentrating its resources on becoming the "primary search engine" for the hundreds of millions of users who visit the platform weekly for advice.
A key element of this strategy is Reddit Answers, an AI-powered search service that will be integrated with Reddit's traditional search function into a single interface. The search bar will be immediately visible to all users, which is expected to significantly increase its usage. Reddit's current search has a weekly audience of over 70 million people, and the number of users for Reddit Answers has grown from 1 million to 6 million in just a few months.
The company's strategy is based on the popularity of search queries where users add the word "Reddit" to their Google searches to find the opinions of real people. However, Reddit faces significant challenges: Google's market dominance (91%), the platform's primary availability in English, and unstable traffic from the main search engine.
Despite these obstacles, the company is showing impressive financial results, with revenue growing 78% year-over-year to reach $500 million. Reddit also plans to expand its search service globally. Reddit's main competitive advantage is the content created by thousands of active communities, which Huffman believes is a superior alternative to algorithmic and AI-generated answers.
