WinRAR 7.13 released with important fixes and new format

A new version of the popular archiver, WinRAR 7.13 and RAR 7.13, has been officially released at the end of July. It's available for Linux, macOS, Windows, Android, and FreeBSD. The key changes in this update focus on security and bug fixes. A vulnerability that allowed directory traversal during file extraction has been patched, and issues with restoring settings and incorrect recovery volume sizes for older compression profiles have been fixed.

The new RAR7 format offers significantly faster compression speeds compared to LZMA2, which is used in 7-Zip. It also supports unique features, such as recovery records for archives, and stores not only the modification time but also the creation and last access times for files.

Despite the release of this new version, the developers continue to actively support the project. According to the latest data, users purchase around 10,000 WinRAR licenses monthly. Notably, support for Windows XP was discontinued in 2022, but the console version, Rar.exe, still works on that OS and newer ones. In August 2023, the developers had already released the 6.23 update to address a critical vulnerability.
