The President of Tatarstan will be renamed rais, without a transition period

The deputies of the State Council of Tatarstan adopted a new version of the amendments to the Constitution of the Republic, changing the name of the highest official of the region from the president to the "head - Rais of the Republic of Tatarstan" immediately after their adoption, without taking into account the expiration of the term of office of the current head of Tatarstan.

The draft law on amendments to the Constitution of Tatarstan, proposing to change the name of the highest official of Tatarstan, was adopted by the Parliament of the Republic on December 23, 2022. At the same time, it contained transitional provisions, according to which the new name would be applied only to the newly elected highest official of Tatarstan, while the name of the position of the current President of the Republic was planned to be retained until the end of his term of office (until 2025).

“The adopted law contains transitional provisions, according to which the new name ... will apply only to the newly elected top official of the Republic of Tatarstan. However, after additional consultations ... it was decided to abandon the transition period,” Albert Khabibullin, Chairman of the State Council Committee on State Construction and Local Self-Government said, at a parliament meeting on Thursday.

He clarified that, in general, changes are being made to six sections, including 60 articles of the Constitution of the Republic. In addition, the draft law introduces two new articles, 25 norms of the Republic's Constitution are proposed to be recognized as invalid. The deputies of the Parliament by a majority of votes adopted a new version of the amendments to the basic law of the Republic.
