UN launched a new global youth strategy

This week, at the UN headquarters in new York, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and world leaders unveiled a new strategy of partnership "Youth-2030" and the initiative "Generation Unlimited", aimed at ensuring quality education, employment opportunities and empowerment for every girl and every young man.

The head of the UN, introducing the strategy, noted that our world today is home for an unprecedented number of young people - 1.8 billion, who face enormous challenges, due to globalization, new technologies, displacement, shrinking civic space, changing labour markets and the impact of climate change.

“At the same time, young people are a vast source of innovation, ideas and solutions. They are pushing strongly for the changes we need in the technology arena, in climate action, and in calling for inclusive and just societies. Empowering young people, supporting them, and making sure they can fulfil their potential are important ends in themselves”, Guterres added.

The new strategy "Youth 2030" contains five key areas designed to improve the lives of all young people on the planet. These are involving young people in solving modern problems; strengthening focus on their access to education and health services; economic empowerment with a focus on training and jobs; promoting their civic and political engagement; support for young people in conflict and in humanitarian crises.

The “Generation Unlimited" programme, which is part of the strategy, will help to ensure that by 2030 all boys and girls will have access to schooling, training and employment opportunities.

As known, representative Turkmen delegation headed by President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov will attend the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly. At the global forum, Turkmenistan plans to initiate the creation of a Global Partnership for Protecting the Interests of Youth.

At the same time, Turkmenistan considers it appropriate to involve in the implementation of this initiative the office of the Secretary-General’s special envoy for youth, UNICEF, UNESCO, UNFPA and other UN agencies and multilateral organizations engaged in youth policy at the international level.

The Turkmen side also expressed its readiness to host the International youth forum, one of the main tasks of which will be to prepare proposals on the structure, composition, methods of activity and other organizational aspects of the new organization.

“Young people make more than 40 percent of Turkmenistan’s population. Promoting youth participation and expanding opportunities for young people will be the critical component of our partnership with the Government of Turkmenistan in the coming years. We are going to start with an analysis of the situation to better understand the needs and aspirations of the youth in Turkmenistan,” said UNICEF Representative in Turkmenistan Shaheen Nilofer.
