The culture and traditions of Central Asia through the lens of a camera: the “Silk Road” exhibition opened in Moscow
16.09.2023 | 16:33 |In the center of Moscow on Red Square in the Main Department Store (GUM) the exhibition “The Silk Road” opened. The capital's trading house introduces guests and city residents to the natural and cultural attractions of Central Asia and thus participates in a project to popularize intercultural and creative ties with neighboring countries, the GUM press service reports.
In the center of the exhibition are works by Gennady Popov, a famous photojournalist who for many years was a staff correspondent for ITAR-TASS in Central Asia. His photographs, taken in the 70-80s of the last century, are a real chronicle of the era and carry the “relaxed energy of the 70s.” He took photographs of both famous people of the time and ordinary local residents. And each of these faces has its own unique human destiny, which the author was able to convey through the lens of his camera.
The organizer of the project to create new connections with Central Asia was his son Andrei Popov. He provided photographs from his father’s archive, to which 83-year-old Gennady Popov devoted his entire life.
Guests of the exhibition can also plunge into the atmosphere of the colorful and hospitable oriental bazaar, which unfolded on the 3rd line of GUM. Here you can “taste” Central Asia and taste national cuisine - pilaf, manti, samsa, sweets and dried fruits, and also buy a piece of the East as a remembrance in the form of souvenirs and gifts - ceramics, dishes, textiles, carpets and much more. The exhibition will run until October 8.
