Customs of Turkmenistan: New Technologies Make the Border Smarter and Safer
21.06.2025 | 03:45 |An important training seminar was held in Ashgabat from June 10 to 19, which will help customs procedures become faster, more efficient and transparent. In fact, the Turkmen customs is actively implementing modern approaches to risk management, using the best world practices.
This is not just routine training. The event became part of a large-scale Program for the Development of Customs Authorities of Turkmenistan until 2028. Its main goal is to keep up with world standards, strengthen technical equipment and, most importantly, transfer all processes to digital. This means less paperwork and more speed.
Particular attention at the seminar was paid to the risk management system. What does this mean? Customs officers will better understand where there are real risks (for example, smuggling or prohibited goods) and focus their attention there. This will allow law-abiding citizens and companies to go through customs much faster, without unnecessary delays.
The training was conducted by international experts from Moldova, representatives of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Grigore Varanita and Dorin Purise. They shared their extensive experience in using the automated ASYCUDA system, which has been successfully operating in Moldova since 2005. The participants of the seminar studied modern approaches to data analysis and risk profiling, as well as examples of successful integration of digital systems.
Following the training on June 19, the employees of the State Customs Service demonstrated a high level of training, showing that they will be able to effectively apply this new knowledge in practice.
This step is a significant contribution to the digital transformation of customs in Turkmenistan. Ultimately, this will benefit everyone: from entrepreneurs engaged in international trade to ordinary travelers. Borders will become not just checkpoints, but smart, efficient and safe gates of the country.
