Turkmenistan's rare markhor population is growing

The population of the screw-horned goat, or markhor, continues to increase in the eastern regions of Turkmenistan.

According to Shaniyaz Menliev, Head of the Scientific Department of the Koytendag Nature Reserve, specialists counted 1,572 adult individuals last year. This marks a record high since observations began.

It is noteworthy that since 2024, thanks to the initiative of nine countries, including Turkmenistan, the International Markhor Day has been established. It is observed annually on May 24th and is dedicated to the conservation of this rare species.
