Scientists at the Essen University Hospital (Germany) have developed a drug that suppresses coronavirus. The scientific group prepared 8 ml of licorice root extract for laboratory research. Then juice, prepared in various doses, was added to one hundred 50-percent coronavirus infecting doses and incubated for an hour at 37 °C. They repeated this on special Vero E6 confluent cells.

Water extract of licorice root showed a neutralizing effect at a concentration of 0.5-1 mg/ml – lower than in tea from this plant. The authors of the investigation believe that the drink may be effective in treating a new type of coronavirus. The results are published in the bioRxiv library.

Previously, the antiviral properties of glycyrrhizin acid, which has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, were proved by the example of herpes simplex and some other viruses.

According to scientists, the effect of licorice root and glycyrrhizin on coronavirus needs to be studied in more detail to confirm their therapeutic effect. But, it is already known that this substance is safe and easily tolerated.

Such reputable physicians of the antiquity, as Hippocrates and Galen used extensively the roots of the licorice in their medicinal compositions. And the famous Avicenna recommended licorice roots for kidney diseases, fever and lung diseases.
