 Turkmenistan and Japan discuss cooperation in Tokyo

Tokyo hosted Turkmen-Japanese political consultations between the foreign ministries of the two countries. The Turkmen delegation was headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Ahmet Gurbanov, while the Japanese side was represented by Masaki Ishikawa, Special Representative of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Central Asia and the Caucasus.

During the meeting held on January 27, it was noted that Turkmenistan and Japan's relations are developing dynamically across the entire spectrum of bilateral relations. The parties discussed the possibility of holding the first summit of the countries participating in the "Central Asia + Japan" dialogue.

Discussing cooperation opportunities and current aspects of international politics, the parties reaffirmed their commitment to expanding constructive partnership, including within the framework of authoritative international organizations, in particular the UN. Emphasis was also placed on the UN General Assembly resolution on proclaiming 2025 the "International Year of Peace and Trust" at the initiative of Turkmenistan, according to a press release from the Turkmen Foreign Ministry.

Touching on the topic of bilateral cooperation in the trade and economic sphere, the parties discussed current projects and issues related to their implementation. The positive experience of cooperation in the oil and gas, petrochemical, energy, transport, and other sectors was noted. Great importance is attached to the activities of the joint committee, designed to facilitate the practical implementation of the existing solid potential for cooperation.

The parties also discussed issues related to the participation of the Turkmen side in the World Expo 2025, which will be held in Osaka, and the holding of National Day Turkmenistan on April 14, 2025, as part of the expo.

On the same day, Deputy Foreign Minister of Turkmenistan Ahmet Gurbanov met with Japanese State Minister for Foreign Affairs Hisayuki Fujii.

During the meeting, an exchange of views took place on the state and prospects for the development of Turkmen-Japanese cooperation in the political, diplomatic, trade, economic, and cultural and humanitarian spheres. The parties confirmed their readiness to further strengthen partnership across the full spectrum of issues.

The importance of visits at the highest and high levels in promoting interstate relations was emphasized.

During the visit of the Turkmen delegation to Japan, the Turkmen delegation met with Hiroyuki Tsubai, a member of the board of directors, executive vice president of “Itochu Corporation”, and chairman of the Japan-Turkmenistan Economic Cooperation Committee.

The parties discussed the implementation of the agreements reached at the meeting of the Turkmen-Japanese and Japan-Turkmenistan Economic Cooperation Committees, held on December 16-17, 2024, in Ashgabat.
