 Online conference “Climate change issues in Central Asia” – Day 3

As part of the third day of the Central Asian Conference on Climate Change, the organizers of the forum made a presentation of the unique Central Asian Climate Information Platform (CACIP).

Currently, one of the main ways of informing the population about environment and climate changes on Earth is the data obtained by users on the Internet. The need for a unique platform capable to process content on climate, temperature growth rates, soil moisture and many other data has urged the development of a platform that provides users with final reliable data on indicators in a structured way. The CACIP platform has been launched in April 2019 on the outcomes of a conference in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. For more than a year and a half, the platform, which has been operating in test mode, continues to be updated with relevant data from the meteorological services of Central Asian countries and information from reports from government sources, scientific publications and Internet resources. Quite a large volume of information for the analysis of climate data, both regional outlook, as well as Central Asian country specific information, was obtained thanks to the cooperation of the platform developers with the UN and NASA.

The CACIP platform contains the following sections:

  • Resources, a section that contains climate maps of the region;

  • Instruments, a section that contains information on state of water resources, energy, soils and water consumption with calculations of the coefficient of performance (COP) of their use in agriculture. The data is updated automatically and contains information for the past 30 years, available not only by year, but also by seasons.

The main idea of creating a platform is the need for further preservation and use of data to increase land yield in Central Asia.

Currently, specialists on soil fertility spend up to 80 percent of their time on searching open sources of information for analysis, while the analysis takes just 20 percent of the time. When the full operating platform will be available to users at the end of test mode, the time spent for information searching will be significantly reduced.

Training to work with the end-user platform will be provided by the staff of the regional environmental center through online webinars. All data to site visitors will be available free.
