Seminar at the IIR: ASEAN and Malaysia
14.11.2024 | 19:00 |On 14th November, a seminar was held at the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, dedicated to Malaysia’s chairmanship of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2025. The event was attended by representatives from the Malaysian Embassy in Turkmenistan, the Rector of the Institute, professors, faculty members, and student youth.
During the seminar, the Ambassador of Malaysia to Turkmenistan, Mohd Suhaimi Bin Ahmad Tajuddin, delivered a speech in English, providing the students with a detailed information about the establishment, as well as about the state's cooperation within this framework. During his speech, in order to familiarize the audience with these details, the Ambassador presented a specially prepared presentation and video.
ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) is a regional intergovernmental organization. It was established in Bangkok on 8 August, 1967, by five founding member countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand.
The ASEAN Declaration states that the main objectives of the Association are to accelerate the economic, social, and cultural development of the region through joint efforts in the spirit of equality and cooperation, strengthening the foundation of the prosperity of this international organization. It also aims to foster a peaceful community of South East Asian countries, based on respect for justice and the rule of law in relations between the countries, as well as to maintain peace and stability in the region in accordance with the principles of the United Nations Charter. Malaysia, as one of the founding member-states of ASEAN, plays a significant role in its activities. Malaysia, which established diplomatic relations with Turkmenistan on May 17, 1992, is one of Turkmenistan's key partners in the Asia-Pacific region.
During the seminar, Mohd Suhaimi Bin Ahmad Tajuddin emphasized the importance of multilateral work and discussed the prospects for cooperation between the two countries in developing political, economic, and cultural-humanitarian relations between Malaysia and Turkmenistan.
