Turkmenistan strengthens international cooperation to reduce methane emissions

Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, Rashid Meredov, presented a report on international cooperation in the context of achieving the goals of the Global Methane Pledge (GMP). The report highlighted that one of the priorities of the country's foreign policy is the successful implementation of international commitments in the field of climate change.

At the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP-28), held in Dubai from 30 November to 12 December, 2023, Turkmenistan officially joined the Global Methane Pledge. In this regard, a draft Roadmap was developed to strengthen international cooperation aimed at achieving the goals of the GMP for the years 2025–2026.

The Roadmap confirms Turkmenistan's commitment to reducing methane emissions by 2030 through the modernization of the energy sector and the implementation of other measures, which will contribute to global efforts to combat climate change.

To successfully implement the Roadmap, close cooperation with leading international organizations is planned, including the Secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, the Islamic Development Bank, and others. In addition, Turkmenistan places great importance on its direct participation in the activities of the MARS digital platform, established under the UN Environment Program.

As part of the Roadmap, a comprehensive set of activities aimed at reducing methane emissions is planned, which includes scientific and practical conferences, roundtable discussions, and seminars, as well as collaboration with foreign companies to address the set goals. Special attention will be given to the development of technical and economic justifications for projects related to the processing and utilization of associated gas, using innovative technologies.
