 Turkmen juniors have already won two medals at the Western Asian Chess Championship

Turkmen chess players won one silver and one bronze medal on the first gaming day (November 29) of the Western Asian Championship for boys and girls under 20, which takes place in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Student of the Turkmen State Institute of Architecture and Civil Engineering Vepaly Khalyniyazov scored 5.5 points out of 7 possible and took second place. International master from India Harshavardhan scored the same number of points, but according to additional indicators, he was in first place in the final standings.

A senior student at Ashgabat school No. 117, Amanmuhammet Khommadov, had 5 points before the last round and met with the Sri Lankan international master Da Silva, and if he won, he could secure a gold medal. However, Amanmuhammet, in a bitter struggle, lost to his experienced comrade, who eventually won a bronze medal, and Amanmuhammet finished the tournament in 5th place.

In the women's category, schoolgirl from Lebap Lala Shohradova took 3rd place with 5.5 points out of 7 possible. Lala's prize-winning place was brought by her victory with black in the last round over the champion of the tournament, international master from Kazakhstan Zeynep Sultanbek, who had a 100% result before meeting Lala. Chess player from Sri Lanka Gunawardana Devindya Oshini took the second place with 6 points.

The tournament was held in rapid chess in 7 rounds, i.e. Each player was allocated 15 minutes for the entire game, with an additional 10 seconds after each move. Forty participants took part in the men's category of the tournament, and 36 participants in the women's category.

Today, November 30, young chess players enter the battle for the championship in classical chess in 9 rounds. The competition will end with a blitz tournament on December 6.
