The timing of the RFU's decision on the transition to AFC is called
22.09.2023 | 13:48 |The president of the Russian Football Union, Alexander Dyukov, said that by the end of 2023, the organization must decide whether to remain part of UEFA or move to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). This is reported by TASS.
"We are currently negotiating with UEFA [about the return of Russian teams]. Depending on their outcome, we will have to decide — either we continue to cooperate with UEFA, or we are considering the possibility of changing the confederation. The decision will need to be made by the end of the year," Dyukov said.
He noted that formally, the RFU can make such a decision on its own, but this requires the unofficial consent of FIFA. "This is not the decision of one person, not even the decision of the executive committee, but the decision of the entire football community, because this is an important and responsible issue," Dyukov added.
In February 2022, the International Football Federation and UEFA excluded Russian national teams and clubs from the draws of international tournaments. On December 30 of the same year, the RFU created a working group to familiarize itself with the process of transition from UEFA to the Asian Football Confederation.
