The status of the sports capital of the CIS countries will be passed to Almaty in 2026
06.08.2023 | 20:51 |The Kazakh city of Almaty will become the sports capital of the CIS countries in 2026. This was announced by the Deputy Minister of Sports of the Russian Federation Alexey Morozov, reports TASS.
"At the meeting of the council, it was unanimously decided to award the title of "Sports Capital of the CIS" to the city of Ganja in Azerbaijan in 2025, and to the city of Alma-Ata in Kazakhstan in 2026. In 2025, Ganja will host the III Games of the CIS countries, the city is preparing a big holiday for athletes, so it is quite fair that Ganja will bear the title of the sports capital of the commonwealth all year round. And in 2026, this status will deservedly pass to Almaty, which has repeatedly hosted major sports competitions on a global and continental scale," Morozov said.
Earlier on Sunday, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports of Azerbaijan Mariana Vasileva said that the third Games of the CIS countries are planned to be held in the Azerbaijani city of Ganja.
The II Games of the CIS countries are held from August 4 to 14 in 11 cities of Belarus in 20 sports.
At an expanded meeting of the boards of the Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Sports and Tourism of Belarus, the Minister of Sports of Russia Oleg Matytsin proposed to regularly hold annual meetings of the Ministers of Sports of the CIS countries and partners, to develop a unified calendar of sports events in the CIS. Another initiative concerns the establishment of the interstate award for contribution to the development of physical culture and sports "The Power of the Commonwealth".
"Do not be afraid to offer new formats, and with the prefix plus. We see from the Games of the CIS countries how interesting it is for other countries outside the Commonwealth to participate in such competitions," Matytsin added.
