Special Representatives of Afghanistan's neighboring countries called for unfreezing its assets
07.03.2023 | 20:53 |The participants of the first meeting of the special representatives of the neighboring countries of Afghanistan spoke in favor of unfreezing the financial assets of this country in foreign banks. This was stated on Tuesday by the special representative of the President of Uzbekistan for Afghanistan Ismatulla Irgashev.
"The special representatives of Afghanistan's neighboring countries during their first meeting, which was held in Tashkent, spoke in favor of the early unfreezing of Afghan assets held in foreign bank accounts, this is necessary to overcome the socio-economic crisis and improve the living conditions of millions of Afghans," Irgashev said at a briefing following the meeting.
"The refund of the money of the Central Bank of Afghanistan should be directed primarily to the payment of wages... to school teachers and doctors, and to support the part of the population that is in a difficult situation," he said at a briefing.
During the meeting in Tashkent, representatives of Uzbekistan, Russia, China, Pakistan, Iran, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan exchanged views on the situation in Afghanistan, including the humanitarian aspect, human rights, as well as education for women and girls.
The United States froze about $7 billion in central bank assets after the Afghan government was overthrown by the Taliban in 2021, and another $2 billion was frozen in European banks.
Washington said that part of the funds will go to the fund to help ordinary Afghans.
Last month, the United Nations said that six million people in Afghanistan are at risk of starvation, and two-thirds of the population are suffering from severe hunger and urgently need help.
