A Hungarian Delegation Held Talks on Economic Cooperation in Ashgabat.
01.10.2025 | 07:30 |ASHGABAT, October 1 | ORIENT. The sixth meeting of the Turkmen-Hungarian Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation was held in Ashgabat on September 29-30. It was marked by active bilateral negotiations and a focus on strategically important sectors. The Hungarian delegation was led by the Deputy State Secretary for Eastern Relations of the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Ádám Stifter.
The visit's program also included a series of substantive meetings, demonstrating a shift toward concrete implementation of agreements, rather than merely discussion. Energy became the main strategic area of cooperation.
The format of the IGC meeting, with key figures participating, including the CEO of MVM Group Co. Ltd. (one of Hungary's largest energy holdings), also indicates a substantive discussion of energy connectivity and potential projects. This confirms that Hungary, as a member of the European Union, views Turkmenistan as a strategically important partner in the supply and diversification of energy resources.
The commission members particularly emphasized the importance of the speedy signing of an Agreement between the governments on the Promotion and Reciprocal Protection of Investments. This document will expand cooperation between the two countries' economic structures and create a legal basis for the inflow of Hungarian investment into Turkmenistan.
The parties reaffirmed Hungary's readiness to act as a gateway for expanding trade and economic cooperation between Turkmenistan and the European Union. The delegation included representatives from key government agencies, including the Ministries of Agriculture, National Economy, and the Hungarian Export Promotion Agency (HEPA).
During the commission meeting, a wide range of traditional areas were discussed, including agriculture and the food industry, water management and environmental protection, healthcare, and the medical industry. The Hungarian delegation's visit, including a visit to the National Museum of Turkmen Carpets, also underscored the parties' commitment to developing cultural and humanitarian ties and tourism.
Following the meeting, a protocol of the sixth meeting was signed. The parties agreed to hold the commission's seventh meeting in Budapest.
